Welding Shields and Welding Goggles: Matching PPE to Arc vs Gas Welding

Arc welding and gas welding put different kinds of light and heat in front of a welder’s face, and that’s why they don’t share the same eye protection. A helmet is built for one; goggles are built for the other.

In short: a welding shield or helmet with a dark shade lens is built for arc welding, where the arc itself produces intense UV and IR radiation that needs blocking. Welding goggles with tinted round lenses are built for gas (oxy-acetylene) welding and cutting, where the flame doesn’t need the same level of radiation shielding but the welder still needs eye protection from brightness and sparks. Using the wrong type for the process leaves a gap either way.

Handheld welding shield: for arc welding, hands briefly free

Our Welding Shield Handheld (308-637) carries a 110x50mm Shade 11 glass and is held up to the face by hand rather than worn on a headband. It’s a lighter-weight option than a full helmet for jobs where the shield only needs to go up occasionally, or where a helmet’s headgear would be impractical.

Welding goggles: for gas welding and cutting

Our Goggles Gasweld Flip Type (304-2) are classic flip-type goggles with twin round lenses, worn like glasses rather than held or fitted with a headband. Gas welding and oxy-acetylene cutting don’t produce the same intensity of arc radiation as arc welding, so goggles with tinted lenses are the standard eye protection for that process rather than a dark-shade helmet or shield.

Why the two aren’t interchangeable

An arc welding shield’s dark shade (11, in our handheld shield) is calibrated for arc-level UV/IR intensity — wearing it for gas welding would be unnecessarily dark for a process that doesn’t produce that intensity. Conversely, gas welding goggles aren’t rated to protect against an arc’s radiation output, so they’re not a substitute for a shield or helmet when arc welding.

Matching to your process
