Ear Muffs vs Ear Plugs: Matching Hearing Protection to Noise Level

Hearing protection isn’t one-size-fits-all, and it isn’t earmuffs-or-earplugs-by-preference either. The right choice comes down to the noise level, how long the exposure lasts, and what else the worker is already wearing on their head.

In short: SHL stocks both ear muffs (headband or helmet-mounted, rated by SNR) and ear plugs (foam or reusable, rated by SNR or NRR), all conforming to EN352. Muffs give a consistent seal that’s easy to check at a glance; plugs are lighter and fit under other headwear, but rely on correct insertion for their full rating to apply.

Ear muffs: consistent seal, easy to verify

Our headband ear muffs range from the economical Headband Ear Defender (201-2) to higher-attenuation options: the Big Blue Three Position Ear Defender (201-AEA060, SNR 28, over-the-head or behind-the-head donning), the Classic Extreme Headband Ear Defender (201-AER110, SNR 30, suited to construction, nail guns, petrol disc cutters, chainsaws and high-frequency welding), and the Sonis Headband Ear Defender (201-AEB040, SNR 37, ventilated TPE headband over stainless steel wire for the best seal in the range). All conform to EN352-1.

Ear plugs: lighter, and compatible with other PPE

Our reusable corded plugs include the UltraFit Reusable Ear Plugs (202-4036, NRR 25, triple-flange, pre-molded, push-in insertion) and the MaxiFit Pro Reusable Ear Plugs (202-AEE110, SNR 32, EN352-2, supplied with a carry case). We also stock reusable corded plugs in rigid case (202-1360) and economy polybag (202-1350) packaging. For single higher-attenuation use, our foam plugs — the 3M E-A-R Classic in Blue PVC cord (202-1101, NRR 29) and cotton cord (202-1110, NRR 30) — are moisture-resistant and flame-resistant, which matters for potential arc flash situations.

Matching the rating to the noise

Higher SNR/NRR numbers mean more sound reduction — the Sonis muffs (SNR 37) and the 3M foam plugs (NRR 29-30) sit at the top of our range, suited to the loudest environments (welding, cutting, heavy plant). Lower-rated options like the standard Headband Ear Defender or the economy corded plugs suit moderate, more occasional noise exposure.

Fit matters as much as rating

A plug’s printed NRR or SNR only applies with correct insertion — pushed fully into the ear canal, not just resting at the opening. A muff’s seal depends on the headband tension and cushion condition. A high-rated product worn incorrectly can perform worse than a lower-rated one fitted properly.

What’s the difference between SNR and NRR?

Both are noise reduction ratings — SNR (Single Number Rating) is the European measure, NRR (Noise Reduction Rating) the US equivalent. Both indicate the amount of noise reduction a product provides when worn correctly.

Which offers better protection, muffs or plugs?

It depends on the specific product — SHL’s highest-rated muff (Sonis, SNR 37) outperforms our lower-rated plugs, but our foam plugs (NRR 29-30) are competitive with mid-range muffs. Check the individual rating rather than assuming one type beats the other.

Can ear plugs be reused?

Yes — SHL’s UltraFit and MaxiFit Pro ranges are reusable and washable with soap and water. The 3M E-A-R foam plugs are designed for single use per session.
